A while ago I wrote an article looking at 6 reasons why most business owners don’t achieve what they want to achieve.

The reality is that everyone knows what they need to do to grow a business but the simple truth most people don’t get there and it is simply because they don’t get enough of the right stuff (the stuff they actually know they need to do) done .

And I think as we crack into a new year, for many people this is where they need to focus on. What are the things that are actually stopping them doing what they know is right?



I missed something,

I think there is another very big reason – that has only appeared in the last couple of years that is a huge stopper for people achieving what they want to achieve.


And it all down to the fact that people are listening to the WRONG people.

And I think it is two fold.

Firstly the reality is that whilst most business owners talk a great game so very few are actually walking the walk – but god are they happy to talk and worryingly most people are happy to listen…

And secondly, people are judging their own progress by other people’s standards.

If you spend any time looking at you social feeds (and people spend a LOT of time on this) you’ll see everyone sharing just how great their world is.   A stack of people with their big cars and shiny teeth talking about how much they earn and how you can do by just following their formula

Its not necessarily that it is bullshit (although it probably is ) it’s that what they achieve – or not –  should have absolutely no bearing one what YOU do.

I have said it before, your business is about the most personal thing in your life – its ONLY has to deliver what YOU want it to deliver and if that is £10k a year great – and is that is £100,000 a year – fine.

Too many people are trying to live someone’s business dream, but I think it goes further than that.

A lot of the business people out there that are showing you how to make the millions are doing it in a VERY different scenario to most of the people they are trying to sell to.


Looking at what the Branson’s of this world are doing is a good thing to do, it is inspiring and we should all learn from their stories but the reality is that the amount of actual day to day, practical help they can offer is minimal because they are doing it with a £40 million budget and 40,000 staff to make it all happen.


Most of us are not in the place.

What is far more useful is to look at what other “real” business owners are doing.   What is “Dave the accountant doing, down the road from you, to take on more staff or have a bigger car or take more time off?”

You will all know other business that are just like you in terms of size and scale etc but they are doing better than you – so, if you an to do better go and find out what they are doing day to day to make the difference.
