I don’t really get chance to watch many films. Over the years there have been loads of good looking movies that I see advertised in the cinema but then completely forget about when it comes to home release.   So when I do have an urge to watch something I tend to delve into my draw of DVD’s.

One of those in my somewhat small collection is The Patriot with Mel Gibson. I’m not sure it’s high in the critics list but it’s the kind of movie I can watch loads of times without getting bored of it.

Anyway, so I am watching it the other night and there is a bit of an ambush going on and Big Mel has to rope in young kids to help him save one of their brothers (classic stuff!.) As he hands them the rifle he imparts some quite brilliant advice…

“Aim small miss small”

i.e. if you just aim for the man in general there is a chance that you will miss completely, BUT if you aim for the button on the man’s tunic even a miss will have the desired effect.

And you’ve probably worked out I am going here but this is really true in business.

So many business owners and marketers are just wildly firing their marketing bullets out there with either no proper clear “broken down” target in mind or no idea if what they are firing is relevant or even interesting to their target audience.

The simple fact is that most business owners are not only failing to aim small, they aren’t aiming at all.

They splurge a load of marketing out there – normally in the classic binge format with loads of activity followed by sod all for a few months or they just dirge out on social media without any idea /thought/ care for whether the time and money they are spending is actually giving them any meaningful results.

This comes down to one simple point.

They don’t have a plan.

  • They have no idea who their perfect customer is.

  • They have no idea what makes THAT person tick (especially true when they think they are marketing to a B2B company)

And as such it is impossible for these business owners to have a coherent, joined up and consistent message going to the right people at the right time. If you are trying to grow your business that is:

  • Expensive

  • Annoying

  • Frustrating

 And ultimately leads to failure. Either their confidence or will to succeed gets broken or bank balance fail.
