I was asked a question on Social Media a few weeks back and it really got me thinking.

I tend to get asked things a lot, mostly they are a simple ‘technical’ question, “How would you use Facebook to sell xxx?” kind of thing, but this one was a bit out of the ordinary.

It was Superhero Day (apparently that exists) and someone asked me, what business super power would I really like to have…

Now I’ll be honest I reckon I gave this one waaaay too much thought, but actually what I came up with really hit a nerve.

After heading through the usual super powers, “future vision”, flying, the ability to understand why Facebook choose to close some accounts down and not others… I came to what actually IS the power I’d like to have.

What I am really striving for is;

The ability to combine drive for the future with mindfulness to totally immerse myself in & enjoy the present.

You see I think it is so easy to keep striving and driving for some future result, a time when it “all falls into place”, that you actually don’t get to enjoy the present.

And I understand that building a business is difficult, It is about as far away as you can get from a bed of roses. It’s full time and all consuming, but I think we as business owners have to find a way to “compartmentalise” that to ensure that we enjoy the present and don’t just wait for the future.

So many of the folk I meet just aren’t enjoying their lives, they are not paying themselves properly and are spending all their ‘non-work time” stressing about work. All the freedom they think they have by working for themselves just isn’t there as they can’t “escape” their work.

This is a massively ‘easier said than done moment’ (hence it falls into the super power category) and for many it is really counter intuitive, but I think many business owners need to take a step back and check that they are enjoying the ride not just waiting for the end result.

Now maybe this is just me getting old and I am not going to tell you that life is short – it isn’t, barring something terrible happening, we all have a pretty good innings ahead of us, but it does move pretty quickly. And before you know it, December is here, 2018 is knocking on the door and you still aren’t achieving what you want and worse still you really aren’t enjoying yourself.

So my advice for what it’s worth, is be honest with yourself about what is really important to you today, tomorrow and ongoing, get a plan in place and work ON THAT to make it happen.  That doesn’t mean dropping the big hairy goals or not grafting to make them happen more just a grown up conversation with yourself that allows you to “smell the roses’ along the way.

I know a lot of happy business owners, and more often than not it isn’t about the money or the end result they are just loving what they are doing whilst the work towards their end goal.

Worth thinking about as you pull on your mask and cape this week.

Being a member of Marketing Jumpleads has been a really good experience.  I’ve met some cool people, doing some interesting things and most importantly it has helped me put ideas into action and get results, which is the name of the game.

It’s really simple. I just did what Julia and Paul told me to do.  I used the tools they gave me, I made £6000 and I’ve created a new subscription income.
